Ciena is a native Californian, born and raised in Orange County. Staying close to where her roots were planted she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Studies from California State University Fullerton. She then went on to obtain her Masters Degree in Cross Cultural Education. With a passion to inspire today’s youth she has been a UCI Young Writers Instructor every summer for the past thirteen years. Ciena is most inspired when she can transfer her love of writing to today’s youth. Placing much emphasis on the creativity of her students, she is able to help the students draw from their own well of imagination and knowledge to create their own unique masterpieces.
She decided to become an English teacher when she was in High School. Her role model in the teaching field was her High School English teacher and mentor Mrs. Glover. The ability Mrs. Glover had to plant seeds of confidence into the lives of her students was something that Ciena admired. Her example was the spark that ignited the flame for Ciena to pursue her career in the field of teaching.
Over the years, Ciena has found that the one thing she enjoys most about Literature, are the many life lessons that are taught. By becoming a part of an authors fabricated reality one can see through another person’s perspective and gain understanding and tolerance of the many different relationship dynamics, lifestyles, and cultures.
One of Ciena’s greatest assets as a teacher is bringing the subject matter to life. She enjoys bringing the student to a place where they can appreciate and take part in the learning process. She has found that if students are drawn into whatever it is that they are learning, they take so much more out of the experience. Her students in the past have always remarked that she was able to make them laugh and that she made learning memorable.
