Hi CLMS Parents,
Today, school counselors are certified, specially trained mental health professionals who focus on prevention and wellness through a counseling program that meets the needs of all students. We are vital members of the education team. The counseling program addresses the needs of students in areas such as; academic, career, and personal/social growth. School counselors advocate, mediate, coordinate, consult, lead and collaborate with teachers, administrators and parents to help students be successful and help them to understand themselves.
All students can learn. A student who is troubled, however, cannot learn as easily. School counselors can help. Divorce, substance abuse, child abuse, poverty, violence, and suicidal thoughts are among the social stressors placing numerous students at risk of educational failure. Early intervention is essential; a counseling program that provides direct services and is directed by a professionally trained school counselor is a critical component of a school's prevention efforts.
The School Counseling program at Canyon Lake Middle School is based on the ASCA (American School Counselor Association) National Model
and is designed to respond to the normal developmental needs of all students in the areas of academic, career, and personal/social growth. School Counseling activities take place in small group settings, individual meetings, and at times, in the classroom. Our goal is to work with students, parents, teachers, and administrators to ensure school success for our children. Our desire is to challenge each student to reach their individual academic potential while becoming responsible and caring people.
