1. One Pager Obj: Write a 1 page letter to incoming 6th Graders. Letters should include advice that will be beneficial to 6th Graders through out the next 3 years. Be prepared to read these in front of class.

1. We continued to read "The Outsiders".
2. Students finished writing the Act It Out Skits. Some students performed these.

1. Students read 434-435 (per. 2)
2. Students watched 05-24-19 edition of CNN 10
(per. 2)
Then, they summarized one of the two stories given.
3. Students saw a short clip on the hardships faced by soldiers, medically speaking (per. 2)
4. Act It Out Obj: In a page to page and a half skit, 2 students will talk about the hardships that were faced by them during the Civil War. Skit should focus on the irony of war and the challenges that they faced on and off the battlefield.

For period 4, we had an earthquake/fire drill. Therefore, we weren't able to accomplish anything during this class.

1. Q.O.D.-See page 430. These men have just enlisted in the Union army. Write 3 questions you would like them to ask.
2. Students read page 430-432
3. Students watched a short parody of the Emancipation Proclamation
4. What If Statement #1-What if Lincoln had never freed the slaves? How might the outcome of the war been different? Would anything have changed? Write a 1/3 to 1/2 of a page on this topic. Use modals like maybe, probably, definitely, must, etc.
5. We read page 433.

1. Q.O.D.-How do you think fighting in battle would have changed a soldier's attitude toward the war? Write a few sentences to express your idea.
2. Role Play with Union General Obj: Create a conversation, which is at least a page to a page and a half long, between a reporter and one of the Union generals: Scott, McClellan, or Grant. Questions should be geared towards exploring the Union's plan to win the Civil War. Be prepared to act out the skits.
3. 1/2 of the class acted out their skits.
4. Students read pages 424 to 425. They stopped at The Union Army Under George McClellan
5. We started a short clip on The Battle of Bulll Run

1. Q.O.D.-What took place at Fort Sumter? Who was defeated? Who won? What event was this the start of? See 416 if need be.
2. Students finished Strengths and Weaknesses Chart in their journals. In order to do this, students had to watch the following YouTube video:
3. Students looked at image on 419. They made the title Making Headlines #3. Obj: If you were a reporter writing about what happened in Baltimore, what would the headline be? Compose it as a Twitter post with a creative hashtag.
4. Students read pages 420-421. Students made the title Contrasting Visions Chart in their journals. Basically, they made a T-chart. On the left was A. Lincoln and on the right was J. Davis. Students needed to write 2 things on each side. The focus needed to be on both men's leadership styles and/or role as a leader to either side of the Civil War.

1. Q.O.D.-Look at Events Leading Up to Civil War timeline on page 415. Place all 5 events order. Number 1 would be the most significant event that lead to the Civil War. Number 5 is the least significant event that led up to the Civil War.
2. Students read Jefferson Davis Inaugural Address section on 414-415
3. Students watched a short parody of Lincoln vs. Davis
4. Students read the rest of 415-416. In addition, students saw a short clip on Fort Sumter
5. Students read 417. They made the title Taking Sides in their journal. Basically, this paper was divided into 2. The first half said North and the second half said South.  Students had to write 2-3 sentences for each section why each half of the U.S. took the position that it did during the Civil War.
6. We looked at a political cartoon that discussed the Mueller Report, Social Security, and Medicare.

1. Q.O.D.-Compare and contrast the view of southerners and President Lincoln on the right to secede from the Union.
2. Students finished S. Carolina Cession presentations
3. Students and the teacher read pages 413 to 415.
4. Students watched a short clip on The First Lincoln's Inaugural Address
5. Students made a top 5 list of reasons the Civil War took place.

1. Q.O.D.-Look at what the Northerners did after they executed John Brown on 408. Why were Southerners outraged at the northern response to John Brown's execution?
2. Students read pages 412 to 413. They stopped at a Nation Splits section on 413.
3. Students watched the first six minutes of a clip on The Election of 1860
4. In groups of 3, students argued for whether or not S. Carolina had the right to secede from the union. Responses should be 4-5 or 5-6 sentences long. 1 student presented on this topic from each group.

2. Students finished reading pages 404-409 of their textbook.
